Update from Sheffield Children’s NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services

Mainstream Schools Team.

Due to ever-increasing demands on the Speech and Language Therapy Service, in the Mainstream Schools pathway, we will be prioritising:

  • new referrals to the service and
  • appointments for children who have, or are in the process of applying for, an Education Health Care Plan.

Special Schools Team.

Within Special Schools, we will work in close consultation with school staff to prioritise our intervention and work.  This includes identifying which children will receive direct input and also planning the most effective ways we can deliver our service. This may include working closely with educational staff to support feeding and promote communication development across the whole school day and in classroom settings.  We are also keen to support communication and feeding at home and always welcome parents/carers to get in contact with our service.

Covid-19

There may also be additional delays caused by Covid-19. Staff will be adhering to advice regarding protective wear, infection prevention and school entry guidance. Wherever possible, our appointments will be offered virtually (through telephone or video).

Advice and Support.

For children who have a therapy plan, parents/carers and school staff should continue to follow this advice.

If you want to discuss any concerns, request programme materials or ask for therapy ideas for your child, please get in touch with your therapist in the usual way. The office telephone number is 0114 226 2333. There are also a number of resources on the Sheffield Children’s NHS Trust website at

https://www.sheffieldchildrens.nhs.uk/patients-and-parents/coronavirus-resources-for-children-and-families

If your child usually attends school but is not at the moment, please get in touch to let us know. We will arrange advice, support and follow-up with you.
