Referrals to Specialist Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) – Quick Guide

 

Who is specialist CAMHS for?
Children and young people aged up to their 18th birthday. 

Our referrers:

GPs – Qualified Local Authority Social Workers – Educational Psychologists – Paediatricians – MAST via CAMHS Primary Mental Health Worker – Health Visitors & School Nurses (with GP agreement)

Referral criteria
Significant mental health difficulties that do not respond to first line treatments or help (e.g. from the GP, MAST or Community Youth Teams

Appropriate conditions
For example: Depressive disorders – Anxiety disorders – Hyperkinetic disorders – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Post traumatic syndromes – Somatic syndromes – Severe attachment disorders


Psychotic disorders, Eating disorders, Neurodevelopmental disorders

New presentations of psychosis, eating disorders and ASD to CAMHS for young people up to 16 years only.

16+ years referrals for psychosis, eating disorders and ASD to Adult Mental Health Services.

Emergency:

Children and Young People aged up to 16 Years

Self-harm or immediate response via Sheffield Children’s Emergency Department (ED)

Out of hours – CAMHS psychiatry on-call via ED or emergency GP services

Young People aged over 16 Years

Self-harm or immediate response via Northern General Hospital Accident & Emergency (A&E)

Out of hours – AMHS psychiatry response via NGH A&E
