Help to remain independent, safe and well at home

There are lots of ways you can get help to continue to live independently at home.  

Equipment and adaptations

Find out about the city wide Care Alarms service which can help you remain safe and secure 24/7 in your home.

You might find that the addition of some equipment to your home such as a handrail, bed rail, bath seat or even a handy grabber or cooking aid can help you maintain your independence at home. There is a range of specialist equipment suppliers you can find in Yellow Pages or search for them online. You can also browse the equipment and living aids store on the Sheffield Directory.

The British Red Cross will loan and hire equipment to you.

Ask Sara is a website which provides practical advice and tips on help with daily living such as how to get in and out of bed or the bath safely, how to manage your medicines and prevent falls and which equipment will be right for your needs.

Meals

If you cannot cook a meal for yourself, there are meal delivery services which can deliver hot or frozen meals to your home. There are also lunch clubs around the city, many can provide transport to the club. You can call the Lunch Club Co-ordinator on (0114) 2536674.

Home Support

There are home support services which can offer cleaning, shopping and a host of other services. If you need some help with your garden or with some home maintenance you will find a list of gardening and handy person services.

Home Library Service

If you enjoy reading but have problems accessing your local library – let the library come to you. The Home Library Service offers a selection of books, talking books, DVDs, music CDs and jigsaws, all delivered free to your home.

Do you want to get out and about but struggle with transport? find out about local community transport schemes

Sheltered Housing and Extra Care Schemes

If living at home is still not an option, you could also consider moving into an extra care scheme or sheltered housing

Moving to a new home

Contact the Health and Housing team if you would like to move home because you are finding it difficult to live in your current home because of health problems
