Learn Mandarin Chinese, open courses at the University of Sheffield

The Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield (SCI) offers a range of courses, training and public events, giving you an insight into Chinese language and culture. The target audience include individuals, businesses, organisations, communities and schools, focusing on the needs of education, business and healthcare.

"Chinese for Everyone" Mandarin Chinese Language courses are offered at Beginners Level through to the Advanced, as well as Tai Chi course, to any adult learners. The courses are held at the University School of Law, Bartolome House, Winter Street (S3 7ND), on weekday evenings, and offered twice a year, following the University Semester Dates.

"Survival Chinese Crash Course", held at 6:30-8:30pm, Monday to Friday, in September and early February, just before 12-week Chinese For Everyone starts, gives you a basic knowledge of the language and can be attended for FREE (if continued to a 12-w course).

"Vocational Chinese", "Business Survival Chinese" and "Private Tuition" can be tailored to suit customer's individual needs. The training includes business culture and underlying philosophy which enables UK companies to communicate appropriately with their Chinese counterparts in daily conversations. The venue can be at the University or on-site at your business.

"Mandarin at School"- within the school time or at afterschool time, are offered free of charge. "China Day" workshops are offered at a nomimal fee. We send teachers to school and delivery the lessons and workshops.  This is to support local schools, including primary schools, secondary schools, academies and independent schools, in starting and developing the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese and Chinese Culture, as well as the study of China across areas of school curriculum.

All the language studies are linked with the Confucius Institute Scholarships. If you take Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) at Level 1, which requires 150 Chinese words, you can be entitled to apply for 4-weeks study scholarships in China during summer. Other eligibilities: you are non-Chinese and aged 16-35.

Public events are also offered to all.

  • "Chinese New Year Extravaganza" at Sheffield City Hall,
  • "China in your Eyes" Photography Competitions,
  • "Chinese New Year Arts Competition for Schools",
  • "Mandarin Summer School for Children”,
