Burton Street Foundation – Day Activities, Day Care & Day Opportunities

Summary
The Burton Street Foundation is a not-for-profit community organisation, based in Hillsborough. Around 2500 people use the site every week, for work and for play. They run and maintain 5 buildings across 3 sites, including the area's largest indoor community space. This varied activity makes for a vibrant community hub, and a fantastic backdrop to a wide range of day services for people with learning disabilities. Description

The Burton Street Foundation is a not-for-profit community organisation, based in Hillsborough.

Around 2500 people use the site every week, for work and for play. They host countless events each year. 14 local businesses are based there, and around 35 charities and community groups use their facilities each week. They run and maintain 5 buildings across 3 sites, including the area's largest indoor community space.

This varied activity makes for a vibrant community hub, and a fantastic backdrop to a wide range of day services for people with learning disabilities. Learning disability services have long been an integral part of Burton Street’s work. The organisation’s ethos is to embrace the things people can do, rather than focusing on what they can’t.

All sessions are designed to help develop self-esteem, self-confidence and self-awareness. They explore new sensory activities, encourage discussion and expression of feelings and thoughts, and enable people to reach their own personal goals.

All activities are arranged by support need, and sessions are planned and staffed based on the abilities and interests of the clients. Programmes of events are not set in stone, and are able to follow the dynamic of groups, and the need of individuals.

In addition to services for adults, Burton Street also provides a range of services for children and younger people. Holiday clubs, Saturday clubs and sibling support services are in high demand across the city.

Not everything happens at their Hillsborough site. Burton Street provides supported living services. This is a truly person centred service supporting people in their own homes and empowering them to live independent lives. They also offer a number of supported holidays each summer, at their holiday cottage in Anglesey.

Burton Street staff are among the most experienced, innovative and professional support workers in the industry. Every member of the Burton Street team receives regular, high quality training, and they have a culture of constant progression and professional development.

The organisation’s home spans a converted Victorian school and a neighbouring factory building. On site there is a sports hall, a function suite with bar, two friendly cafes, various well-kept outdoor spaces including a sensory garden and accessible playground, a hydrotherapy pool, two sensory centres, an indoor park, a soft play area, and a variety of unique activity spaces.
