Burnishing and Sawdust Firing

Summary
Burnishing clay is a process that has been used for thousands of years to seal the surface of pots before the discovery of glazes, improving their ability to hold water.

Description

Today it is used more as a decorative technique, and this short course will focus on the process of building rounded, organic forms before burnishing the surface to a mirror-like shine and firing them in pits of sawdust, leaving beautiful smoky patterning on the surface.
