South Yorkshire Archaeology Service

South Yorkshire Archaeology Service works to look after the archaeology of the four South Yorkshire districts. As well as advising on issues to do with the archaeology of South Yorkshire, we maintain the South Yorkshire Sites and Monuments Record or SMR (also known as a Historic Environment Record or HER), a record of known archaeological sites in the area. Digital information from our database is now searchable online via the Heritage Gateway website: - but more detail on some archaeological sites may be held in our paper records and this information can be consulted in person, by appointment.

The results of our South Yorkshire Historic Environment Characterisation project are also available online, on a dedicated website:

We organise an annual South Yorkshire Archaeology Day - in 2016 this day will be held on November 19th - see our webpage for details:

NB We are an advisory service and do not undertake fieldwork.
