Crafting the Short Story: Adventures in Creative Reading and Writing

Summary
On this 10 week course we'll read some of the best short fiction from round the world and use this as inspiration and a teaching tool for your own writing. You will meet others with a passion for literature and flex your imagination and creativity. Build your confidence and analytical skills through weekly structured reading and writing exercises.

Description

Reading short fiction can teach us many things about people and the story worlds they inhabit but this concise form is also ideal for understanding what goes into crafting a good story. Because the form lies somewhere between the poem and the novel, it is one of the most challenging of literary forms but one which has attracted some of the best writers in the world. This creative reading and writing course aims to be inspirational whilst being instructional. We will explore the story writing process, from where to find original ideas, to practical advice on developing these into short fiction.

As well as reading some of the best fiction from a range of international writers, you will become familiar with practical techniques essential for achieving maximum impact in your own work. Aspects of the course will include structure and narrative development, characterisation and dialogue, point-of-view or focalisation, voice, genre, prose style, revision and editing. You will be encouraged to experiment with form and content and the emphasis will be on the value of the writing process as well as the finished product. A diverse selection of published short stories will provide a stimulus for critical analysis and the help us to understand the craft of writing.
