Fledglings is a charity which helps parents and carers of a child with special needs of any kind to find simple, affordable solutions to practical problems.

Fledglings can help by giving information and advice about products to help with your child’s specific development and learning needs or your needs as a carer. In addition we may be able to order and supply those items or refer you to another source of supply. We specialise in finding those unusual items which may not be easily available elsewhere or those designed specially for children with additional needs.

Eligibility criteria for your service and any priority groups
  • Fledglings’ service exists primarily for the benefit of children with any form of disability and the families who care for them.
  • It is a service that usually operates remotely by phone and email and is open to all – parents, relatives, other carers and professionals who share our objectives of :

1. Helping children with additional needs of any kind to achieve their potential & 2. supporting families by sharing information to address their enquiries

1. We try to deal with all enquiries as they come in but sometimes enquiries take time to resolve, and families are waiting for some time for a response. If the waiting is likely to take more than 2 weeks, we will inform the enquirer.

2. Orders placed for items we sell will be despatched on the first despatch day after payment if they are in stock. Where items are not in stock despatch is dependent on our suppliers’ delivery dates. If the wait is likely to be more than 2 weeks, we will inform the customer.

3. Bespoke items may be subject to longer waiting times but will be despatched as soon as they are available.

Staffing arrangements details

Fledglings’ staff and Trustees consist of those with many years of experience and knowledge gained both personally and professionally in the field of childhood disability. Two of our Helpline staff are parents of a child with a disability, and we work as a team to deal with complex and specific issues. Fledglings does not offer face to face support so most of the services listed above are not offered by us. Typetalk may be used by service users who are deaf.

Staff training to support children/young people with SEND

Fledglings service is an advice based service. Two members of our helpline are parents of a disabled child, and one of these has also worked professionally in the area of special needs.

The founder and one other Trustee have many years of professional and personal experience and other staff members have personal experience of disability and have received in house training within Fledglings.
