Hydra Tots Private Day Nursery

At Hydra Tots you can expect outstanding care for your child. Staff are committed to providing an exciting day learning through play for all our children. We believe one of the key factors that contribute to our outstanding care and status is through having an extremely dedicated group of passionate individuals who work amazing as a team to support your child throughout their time at nursery.


We are so proud of our Ofsted Outstanding nursery, we put so much creativity and imagination into the nursery. Our motto is 'A magical day learning through play' and we definitly make the space as magical as possible for the little ones to enjoy. The activities and resources we provide offer thought provoking and stimulating oppertunities. 

We have a total of 6 large bespoke rooms. Two rooms for children aged 6 months to 2 years, two rooms for children aged 2-3 years, one room for children aged 3-4 and a preschool room for children aged 4-5.

We offer Free Early Learning (FEL) places for 2, 3 and 4 year olds including 30 hours funding.

There are 22 staff in the nursery - all of our staff are highly qualified and are extremely passionate about providing the best early education for your child. We currently have 1 apprentice, the rest of our staff hold Level 3 and above all the way up to Level 6. 

The managers are always updating their knowledge, encouraging the staff to gain new skills. We also host in house training sessions to keep everyone as up to date as possible. 

We have 2 SENCo's on site, any support/ advice needed they are both here 5 days a week to answer any questions you may have! They are a huge benefit to the children here at Hydra Tots! 

We hold our 5 star food and hygiene rating as well as the Every Sheffield Child Articulate and Literate (ESCAL) award and Healthy Early Years award 2019.  Lovely snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day. Lunch and Dinner are freshly prepared on site by our Chef's, the children have a vast menu to explore over the week at nursery. 

We have maintained our Ofsted outstanding status since opening our doors back in 2011.

Local Offer

  • Children are assigned a key worker from the start of their time at nursery
  • The key worker is responsible for assessments and observation records on all children
  • If key workers have any concerns about a child’s development, observations are more frequent and the Special Educational Needs
  • Coordinator (SENCO) is involved with observing and recording

All rooms operate a strict ratio depending on children's ages.

  • 6 months to 2 is 1 adult to three children
  • 2-3 yrs is 1 adult to 4 children

Staff training to support children/young people with SEND 
  • Staff have received Makaton training in the last 6 months and use signs in the nursery
  • Two staff have received basic training on using Picture Exchange Communication  (PECS)
  • Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)  regularly attends SENCO briefings and accesses training and support from the specialist language Centre. Both SENCO'S have recieved Level 3 qualifications in the role.
  • Our nursery receives specialist support from the UCAN language Centre, Speech and Language therapists and from the Early Years Inclusion Team.

  • Children with additional needs have a home school book that is filled in each day with what the child has eaten and a description what the child has been doing in nursery that day
  • Information is shared  verbally to parents
  • Individual Education Plans are reviewed every three months or sooner depending on the progress of each child
  • Parents are invited to review their child’s Individual Education Plan with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator and discuss progress made and any new plans.
  •  Children are asked on their views about the learning environment  indoors and outdoors, what activities their like to play, and their current interests are turned into maths activities or mark making to develop their interest.
