Lady Mary Wortley Montagu has connections to South Yorkshire, and is represented in the Graves gallery. She led a scandalous and tortuous life, achieving much along the way. The only preventative to smallpox for the eighty years prior to vaccination was due to her. She was well known in literary circles, corresponding regularly with Alexander Pope. She was the first European woman to describe a women-only Turkish hot bath, again leading to scandal. She lived the last half of her life on the Continent, again mired in controversy.
The talk is a Powerpoint presentation. In view of coronavirus the talk has been expanded a bit to cover the origins of vaccination.
