Sheffield Down Syndrome Support Group
Our aim is for families to provide advice, support and friendship to each other and to exchange information on how to best support our children.
SHEDS has been in existence for over 10 years. The group is not a registered charity but is a voluntary support group affiliated to the national Down's Syndrome Association. Our members raise funds for our activities through sponsored activities, and we have also occasionally received contributions from local businesses.
We do currently have a Baby & Toddler Group that meets at Saint Peter's Church, Greenhill on Monday mornings (10:00-11:30). Due to Covid restrictions, we have to limit the number of people that can meet; so getting a free ticket is advisable. Although it's aimed at our younger members, anyone from the Down Syndrome community is welcome to join us!
Pre-Covid, we met once a month for an informal coffee morning (or family get-together); we are in the process of reimagining this for the Autumn of 2021. When it is up and running again, the meeting is open to all families who have a child with Down's syndrome - irrespective of their age - and siblings are welcome too. We also organise family outings, a summer picnic, play-dates in the park, an annual visit to the Panto at the Lyceum, as well as a Christmas party.
We have a private Facebook Group that welcomes new members, plus a public Facebook page and Instagram account that shares activities and resources.
