b:friend

b:friend is a registered charity, funded by the big lottery fund. We run a one to one befriending scheme as well as community social groups.
Befriending Scheme

We receive referrals via our website for people over 65 who would benefit from a little extra company. Referrals can be made by GPs, district nurses, family, anyone who knows of an older person who would benefit from our service. Once a referral has been made we match that person with a volunteer befriender. Befrienders register with us as volunteers via our website. Once registered we meet with volunteer befrienders and they are DBS checked. We pair individuals based on locality and shared interests. Befrienders go on to visit an older neighbour once a week for an hour, in which time they may chat, listen and support someone who may not otherwise receive that company. Each befriender and neighbour receive regular support to ensure both are benefitting from the project.

Social Clubs
b:friend has two social clubs in Sheffield, one in Gleadless and one in Wharncliffe Side. The Gleadless club runs every Wednesday 1.30-3.30 at Gleadless Methodist Church, Gleadless Road, Sheffield S12 2LJ. The Wharncliffe Side club runs every Thursday 2-3.30 at Wharncliffe Side Community Centre, Brightholmlee Lane, Sheffield S35 0DD

Eligibility criteria for your service and any priority groups

All referrals of older neighbours and registration of volunteer befrienders are taken via the website www.letsbfriend.org.uk  We are unable to take referrals for people with dementia as our volunteer befrienders are not trained to cope with additional needs of this group.
