Osteoporosis 2000
Osteoporosis 2000 is a patient-led support group, based in Sheffield. Our aims and objectives are to:
Provide support to patients with osteoporosis and their carers.
Provide easy access to information about osteoporosis for those concerned about the disease.
Promote healthy bones through the provision of suitable exercise and mobility classes with trained instructors.
Raise awareness about osteoporosis, its consequences and available treatments.
Helpline – 0114 234 4433. The helpline is available Monday to Friday 10am–3pm. Volunteers who have osteoporosis themselves are on hand to offer support and share their experiences about coping with this disease.
Drop-in Centre. Our premises at Hillsborough Barracks are open for visitors Monday to Friday 10am-3pm. The Centre Manager or one of our volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you may have. If they cannot provide the answer straight away they will endeavour to find out on your behalf and get back to you as soon as possible.
Information Leaflets
Osteoporosis 2000 has a range of patient information literature. Most of the general information is free with the option to purchase more detailed booklets at a small cost.
Exercise classes
The charity sponsors exercise classes at a number of venues around Sheffield. The classes are suitable for men and women of all ages and abilitites including those limited by osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and/or other health related problems. Attending a class on a regular basis will help develop muscle strength, flexibility, balance and most importantly help to keep you independent.
The people who attend our classes cover a wide age range so the exercises are tailored to suit individuals’ needs. Those with good mobility use weights for extra resistance and those who are less confident can use chairs for support. The improvement in fitness, strength, balance and flexibility is clearly visible in those who attend regularly. The social side of the classes is also significant. An hour of movement to up beat music, a laugh with friends and coffee to finish is equally important.
