Portland Works
Since 2013, the iconic but dilapidated Sheffield cutlery works has been undergoing a transformation. It’ll take a long time, but the aim is to restore the whole Works into decent low-cost workspace where we can promote creativity and small scale manufacturing by skilled craftspeople, and provide opportunities for young people to become the craftspeople of tomorrow.
What we do:
Industrial Conservation
We renovate and conserve Portland Works as a functioning, self-sufficient community heritage location.
Support Our Makers
We support start-ups, small-scale manufacturers and creative businesses with workspace, help and guidance.
Education & Outreach
We develop the site as a heritage and education resource that gives back to the local community.
Our newly refurbished “Maker Space” is ideal for events, exhibitions and workshops and is now available for hire.
Situated in the heart of Sheffield, this is the largest space at Portland Works at around 1100 square feet or 100m2. The room is a simple rectangular shape which makes it easy to adapt for different uses and the large period windows along both of the long sides give an amazing amount of natural light. The walls are finished back to their original 19th century brick which combined with the historic setting, give a unique experience for your guests. The Maker Space is located on the Randall Street side of the works and situated on the first floor with access via a wide staircase.
The room has blackout blinds installed on all windows and if required, we can also provide a new Sony 5,000 lumens HD laser projector, 3m wide projection screen and sound reinforcement equipment. Normal capacity is 60 and catering options are available.
Please note that the Maker Space is situated on the first floor with access via a wide but curved staircase. Unfortunately we do not have access by lift at this time.
