My talks are:
- A Palace by a River (a history and a tour of the Houses of Parliament);
- The Slow Road (a journey around the English waterways);
- Hotels in the Sky (the story of the Zeppelin Years, 1900 - 1937);
- The Seed of Kings (tracing the bloodline of the British monarchy);
- The Sky's the Limit (a - more or less - affectionate history of the skyscraper);
- Beyond the Blue Horizon (the Golden Age of Air travel, 1920s - 1950s).
All six talks are Powerpoint presentations, richly illustrated, and are designed to last one hour. They can be shortened or lengthened if necessary.
A Palace by a River - a history and a tour of the Palace of Westminster. Usually known these days as the Houses of Parliament, this former royal palace has been at the centre of English and British history for a thousand years. Learn its remarkable story and admire the sheer exuberance of the Victorian buildings that now adorn the site.
The Slow Road - explores the English waterways on a cruise by narrow boat that inlcudes tidal waters and non-tidal rivers as well as man-made canals. The talk is illustrated with modern and archive pictures, and features original verses.
Hotels in the Sky - covers the Zeppelin years when few people thought aeroplanes would ever be viable passenger transports, and the future of air travel belonged to the airship. The talk includes original newsreel footage, and follows the airship story from its origins in 1900 to its terrifying end in 1937.
The Seed of Kings - traces the ancestry of the monarchy from Alfred the Great to the present queen, following the bloodline as it travels beyond England to Scotland, Flanders, Normandy and Germany.
The Sky's the Limit - explores the origins of skyscrapers in 1880s America, charts their explosive growth in the 20th century and since, and looks at their important place in popular culture such as novels, tv and films.
Beyond the Blue Horizon - follows the growth of air travel from the first crude and unreliable airliners after World War One, through the years when flying became a glamorous, stylish and very comfortable experience for the wealthy, and ending with the arrival of the first jets that ushered in the modern world of mass air travel.
