Session aims:
- Understand what asthma is and how it is treated.
- Know why asthma can be problematic and what it’s impact can be.
- Be aware of inhaler and spacer devices and how to use and care for them correctly.
- Recognise signs of poorly controlled asthma and be able to escalate concerns appropriately.
- Recognise an asthma attack and know what to do in response.
- Understand how poor medication adherence, smoking/second-hand smoke exposure, poor indoor air quality and obesity affect asthma and support people appropriately.
- Understand how environmental factors including air pollution, food and seasonal allergens impact asthma.
- Be able to have supportive conversations with the families of children with asthma signposting them to additional resources where appropriate.
- Recognise that poor asthma control may be a warning sign for safeguarding and gather facts in a non-confrontational manner and react to safeguarding concerns.
