Steps and Ramps

Steps

Sometimes steps can be too high or narrow.  You could consider altering the step to make them more accessible for you.  Sometimes having more lower wider steps are preferable to having fewer high ones. The addition of a handrail which runs along the length of the steps can provide extra support.

Ramps/Threshold Ramps

If you have reduced mobility or are using a mobility aid like a walking frame, mobility scooter or wheelchair you may find steps and thresholds challenging and may need to access your home in a different way. Ramping/threshold ramps could be a temporary or permanent solution.

Access Ramps / Threshold Ramps

There are a number of ramps on the market which allow solutions ranging from small wedges to assist over thresholds, to a fully installed ramp which provides access from street level to the front door. These can be permanent or temporary. The type of ramp you need will depend on your personal circumstances and may require an adaptation to be made to your home.

Things to consider about ramps

A gentle slope is preferable for use when mobilising or pushing a wheelchair therefore you should consider the height of the step and the length you have available.  If the ramp is too steep it will be difficult to use.  Ramp providers can offer you further guidance on this.
