Coping with fear, anxiety and strong emotions

Children and young people often experience fear, anxiety, and other strong emotions, which can be challenging for parents to navigate. Maintaining normal routines and relationships is crucial in helping your child process and adjust to stressful experiences. It's also important to provide the specific care and attention they may require, tailoring your response to their individual needs.

Here are some tips from Triple P to support you in this situation:

Guide your child to express their feelings in constructive ways. This can involve talking about their emotions, engaging in creative activities like drawing or writing, or participating in physical activities to release tension. Helping children articulate their feelings enables them to manage anxiety and other strong emotions more effectively.

Be mindful of your child's exposure to media that may trigger strong emotional responses. Discuss news stories or online content with them to provide context and reassurance, helping them process information without becoming overwhelmed.
