Sensory Service

What is the sensory service?

The Sensory Service helps parents / carers, school staff and young people to have a better understanding of sensory processing and how this impacts everyday life.

How we work?

We provide information and advice on how to adapt activities and the environment to support children’s sensory differences.

Who is this service for?

This service is for school aged children living in Sheffield with sensory differences that are impacting on their home and /or school life.

To access our service your child must:

  • have a Sheffield address and be registered with a Sheffield GP
  • be between the ages of 5 and 16 years old, or 4 years old if they have started school
  • not be under the CAMHS learning disability team

We can’t support children who live outside the Sheffield area or who are older than 16 years.

If your child is 4 years or younger, you can request a referral to the Early Years Occupational Therapy team by your GP.

How do we help?

Our service has different pathways:

  • parent sensory workshop (online or face to face)
  • community clinic appointment
  • sensory coaching and advice
  • understanding my senses group
  • telephone and email advice

If your child is not attending school due to their sensory differences, we will work with you, your child and their school to help develop an individual sensory plan.

How to access help

First you need to visit the virtual therapy area to access our online training workshop, or email making.sense@nhs.net for a face to face workshop.

If you need more support after you have accessed the training resources, we encourage parent/ carer self-referrals.

You can self-refer by clicking the ‘Give feedback and request further support’ blue tab on our virtual therapy area.

If you need help to complete this form, please call (0114) 271 7610. Just ask to speak to a member of the Sensory Service for help
