Bathing Equipment
Getting in and out of the bath safely to take a bath or use a shower over the bath can be a concern but there are several options available to help you maintain your independence. These products allow you transfer and remain in a seated position to shower or bathe which can reduce the effort of bathing and increase safety and reduce the risk of falls.
Bath and Shower Boards
Bath and shower boards are usually a plastic board which spans the width of the bath, resting on the bath rim and is secured by adjustable brackets. Bath boards come in different widths and fit across the top of your bath to give you a place to sit whilst you are washing or showering.
Swivel Bather
A swivel bather is a white plastic seat that can rotate and lock into positions to facilitate movement over the bath side. The seat is fixed to a metal frame that rests securely on the rim of the bath and comes with back and arm rests to provide extra support.
Internal Powered Bath Lift
A powered bath seat lowers and raises a person into a bath. This bath seat is secured by large rubber suckers and is powered by rechargeable batteries or by mains powered compressed air. Some bath seats include padding to increase comfort and come in a range of weight limits.
Things to Consider
Due to the size/shape or mouldings of some baths and bathrooms, products may not fit correctly. It is important to check this if you purchase one.
If you have epilepsy showering is recommend over bathing and therefore bath lifts would not be recommended. Please speak to your GP or epilepsy nurse for more advice.
The person using bathing equipment generally needs to be able to lift their legs over the side of the bath whilst sitting or be assisted by a carer.
As a guide these products may be more suitable if you are able to lift your legs into bed.
If you continue to have difficulty bathing or showering safely you should strip wash until a safe method has been found.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions observe weight limits.
