Supporting Neurodivergent Pupils - Service Referral Requirement Guide

This guide shows the services that are available to support neurodiverse children and young people in Sheffield with their education, health, and care. It also tells you what is needed to access them.

Autism Social Communication Education and Training Service (ASCETS)

No diagnosis or requirement to be on the waiting list/pathway.

ASCETS Outreach delivered by Rowan/Mossbrook

0-5 SEND Service (including Portage and Early Years Language Centre)

No diagnosis or requirement to be on the waiting list/pathway.

Educational Psychology Service

No diagnosis or requirement to be on the waiting list/pathway.

Referral Requirement

Special Needs Inclusion Play Service (SNIPS)

Diagnosed disability.

Short Break

Children and young people aged between 5 and 17 years with a disability who need a higher level of support.

Short Breaks grant

Diagnosis needed.

Higher rate of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) required.

Direct payment

Assessment required to assess social care need.

Personal budget – Special Educational Provision

Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan required.

Parenting Hub

No diagnosis required.

Family Intervention Service (FIS)

No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required.

Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) Team

Disability diagnosis required.

SEND Careers Advice

EHC plan required but no diagnosis needed.

SEND Travel Assessment and Training team

No diagnosis or EHC plan required.

All special schools in Sheffield need children and young people to have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan in place.

All mainstream schools with an Integrated Resource in Sheffield need children and young people to have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan in place.

Referral Requirement

Speech and Language Therapy Service

No diagnosis required.

Sensory Services

No diagnosis required. Referral from Health Professionals or parent/carer.

Motor Skills Team

No diagnosis required – referral from a health professional.

Annual Learning Disability Health Checks

Learning Disability diagnosis required by many GPs. Other GPs will carry out without.

Community Paediatric and Neurodisability Service

Autism and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis required.  

Other support for autistic children and young adults can be searched for on this website (Sheffield Directory and SEND Local Offer).

A small number of children with additional medical needs may require follow up.  A referral will be needed from a GP.

Children and young adults diagnosed with ADHD who need medication will remain under the care of this service.  Where an ADHD diagnosis has been given elsewhere and medication is requested, a referral is needed from a GP.

Other neurodisability medical conditions would need a referral from a GP.  They would be managed in line with medical need.

Community Learning Disability Team (adults)

Assessment needed to confirm learning disability.

Learning Disability and Mental Health (LDMH) Team (CAHMS)

Diagnosed moderate, severe or profound learning disabilities and neuro-disabilities.

Personal budget – Health

Required to meet the criteria for NHS Children’s Continuing Care, NHS funded Short Breaks, are Section 117 eligible or receive Continuing Healthcare for adults.

Autism in Schools (AiS) / Partnership in Neurodiversity in School (PINS)

No diagnosis required.

AiS is the initiative for Secondary Schools

PINS is the initiative for Primary Schools that feed into the AiS secondary schools.

Neurodiversity Sheffield (Family Action)

No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required for their Early Support pathway.

ADHD diagnosis required for their Post Diagnosis offer.

Spectrum Gaming

No diagnosis required but must identify as autistic and live in Sheffield or other funded area (can self-refer).

Sheffield SEND Information and Advice Service (SENDIAS)

No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required

Sheffield Parent Carer Forum Peer Support Service

No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required.

ACCT (Autistic Children and Carers Together) Sheffield

Autism diagnosis required for their Special Needs Inclusion Play Service (SNIPS) provision.

Burton Street Foundation

Dependent on session.

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway

Autism or Learning Disability diagnosis.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

For those under 16 years old. No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required.  Supporting evidence required for application.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

For those aged 16 and over No diagnosis or waiting list/pathway required.  Supporting evidence required for application.

Autism Plus Specialist Employment Support

Autism diagnosis required.

Supported Internships

Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan required in most circumstances.  Sheffield College will consider without EHC plan.  No diagnosis needed.

Opportunity Sheffield - Local Supported Employment Programme

Autism or Learning Disability diagnosis required.

Disability Employment Advisor (Department for Work and Pensions)

Have a disability or health condition that impacts ability to work. Contact local Jobcentre.

Disabled Students Allowance (University support)

Have mental health difficulties, long-term illness or any other disability.

Post 16 Education Options

Depends on the setting.
